Memories That Are Not Yours... is an artistic project that explores the formation of a new sense of belonging. It engages with the question:
At what point does one cease to belong to one place and begin to belong to another?
The family archive serves as the foundation for this reflection. The author’s father, a Moroccan migrant, undertook the task of documenting the creation and growth of his family over the years. His intention was not to produce images from a photographic perspective, but rather from an experiential impulse; to preserve memory. Yet, almost inadvertently, he has recorded the loss and reconfiguration of his sense of belonging, as well as that of the author’s mother.
From this starting point, the project develops a process of deconstruction and reconstruction of family memory which, in turn, resonates with broader migrant experiences. It navigates migratory grief, liminality, and the emergence of a renewed sense of belonging, drawing from the father’s amateur photographic practice; initially driven by a desire to engage with and enjoy what he was building through the camera he had just bought.
